About the Favicon Generator

Everything you need to know

What is a favicon?

A favicon is the small icon shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, and mobile home screens. Modern platforms expect several sizes and formats: a multi-resolution .ico for legacy browsers and Windows tiles, PNGs for Android and PWA, an Apple touch icon for iOS, and optionally an SVG for crisp rendering at any scale. This generator produces all of them from a single source image.

Best practices for favicon design

Start with a square image at 512×512 or larger — SVGs are ideal. Keep the design simple; icons are usually displayed at 16×16 to 32×32 pixels, so fine details disappear. Use high contrast; test on both light and dark browser themes. If your logo is horizontally oriented, generate a square alternative just for the favicon. Add 8–15% padding around the icon so it doesn't touch the tab edge.

The complete favicon set for 2025

For modern web projects, generate: favicon.ico (multi-size, 16–48), favicon-16x16.png and favicon-32x32.png (browser tabs), apple-touch-icon.png at 180×180 (iOS home screen, no transparency), android-chrome-192x192.png and android-chrome-512x512.png (Android home and PWA splash), a site.webmanifest linking the Android icons, and optionally favicon.svg for vector rendering. The Complete preset generates all of these at once.

Privacy, caching, and troubleshooting

Because everything runs on your device, your source image never leaves your browser — ideal for private logos and unreleased branding. Once you upload the generated files, browsers cache them heavily; when updating, hard-refresh your browser and verify in an incognito window. Some CDNs (Cloudflare, Fastly) cache favicon.ico separately — purge them after replacing. If your favicon still doesn't update, verify the file is at the site root and returns 200 OK when requested directly.
